Recession And Its Effects On Lawyers

Many loses have been taken as this recession continues on, and that isn’t any different for the lawyers throughout Las Vegas. That is why making sure you get the best for what you pay for is so important

As I read Recession v. Lawyers in the Las Vegas Business Press, I took special note of some of the issues that lawyers in the Vegas valley are facing in this current economic downturn. Bryon Francis, an Armstrong Teasdale partner, said, “The more knowledgeable lawyers will make the most money, because they are the most efficient.” He continued “Billable hours promote inefficiency in lawyers.” I was slightly taken aback by this statement.

I feel that billable hours would still be a well-rounded and efficient way for lawyers to receive income for their services. Unfortunately, there are some aspects in which billable hours are not great, including; the more time a lawyer spends on your cause the more money they can charge, more productive or knowledgeable lawyers can do things quicker, thus charge less for their services and tracking those hours can be difficult.
 
With all of these negatives, how can one possibly think that billable hours could be an acceptable way for tracking services rendered? Developing technology brings with it a sense of increased efficiency and accountability. New software and upgraded software are always being released. Sometimes this can create a headache, but with the right components behind you, you can do more work for a lower cost price. If you get the right software or even buy the software from the right company you can be confident that you have what you need. You wouldn’t go to Target to buy an Armani three-piece suit.
 
With making sure you get what you want comes the need to understand what you have. If you buy something and don’t know how to use it, what good is it? Some companies just sell you the product and don’t care what happens afterwards, as long as they get their money. Why not get the product you want with the support you need all the way through purchase and daily use?
 
That is why when I hear about these companies that want to completely change the way they do business I have to wonder what they are thinking. Why not take what you have and add what you need to improve your business? It is a much easier process, and usually more efficient.
